His name is Se-ket-Tu-Ma-Quah in the Lenape (Delaware) language, but the name everyone knew him by was Black Beaver. He lived an adventurous, cosmopolitan life of a trapper, hunter, reconnoiter, explorer, leader, peacemaker and minister. His experiences and accomplishments were instrumental in the outcome of wars, westward expansion, U.S. economic growth and peaceful diplomatic relationships among Nations.
No other traveled and in the process blazed trails figuratively and literally like Black Beaver. His people, the Delaware revered, followed and depended on his courageous leadership. The United States decorated him as an indispensable hero and those he provided services to, wrote meaningful words, photographed, painted his picture while glorifying his countless achievements. His life’s stories are many and more are being discovered.
